APPLICATIONS |
| Following is a list of useful applications and utilities
that work well on the Eee in Windows XP. I am attempting to find mainly
freeware or open source programs to add. Considering the Eee is supposed to
be a low cost portable laptop, no reason to spend $500 in software on a $550
PC. There are multiple types of applications and utilities that are
identified in this section: - Freeware = Free to download and
use.
|
| Application | Installed File Size | Type | Comments |
| CCleaner Site | Download |
1.3 MB | Freeware Windows App |
Windows can contaminate it's registry and
clutter up your hard drive (or SSD) with data that is not really necessary.
Consider CCleaner your perfect maid for your PC. Be sure to read carefully
what you're cleaning, because it can wipe clean so many things you'll nearly
be back at a fresh Windows installation state. Simple to use, and integrates
itself with your recycle bin for easy access (right click interface). |
| ClamWin Antivirus Site | Download |
20.1 MB | Freeware Open Source Windows App |
ClamWin is a free, open source, simple to use, effective resident virus scanner with a small memory footprint. I would have to say it is my favorite free anti-virus to date. AVG and Avast! are other anti-virus programs to consider. |
| Daemon Tools Lite Site / Download |
5.0MB | Freeware Windows App |
Daemon Tools Lite is a freeware utility that
acts as a virtual DVD-ROM device. This allows you to mount CD or DVD images
without the need for the actual CD or DVD to be inserted into the PC. When
you install Daemon Tools, it automatically sets up one virtual DVD ROM, but
allows up to four simultaneously. Drive letters are assigned as if it is an
actual DVD drive. Many games have 'mini-ISO' images created by users. These are greatly reduced images of the actual CD or DVD to allow you play the game without needing the several hundred MB of data on your PC, typical of an imaged CD. |
| EeeCtl Download |
38 KB | Freeware System Utility | Freeware utility that offers system
adjustments, and displays basic CPU info in the system tray: (1) CPU speed - default steps between 630MHz, 765MHz, 900MHz. (2) Fan speed set to Native (BIOS), Automatic, or fixed % (3) Backlight adjustment, including "Ultra bright" option not offered in stock BIOS (4) Displays CPU temperature and FSB speed (i.e. 70 = 630MHz, 100 = 900MHz) in system tray |
| Gavotte Ramdisk Download / Info | Article |
320 KB | Freeware System Utility |
Great utility. Highly recommended especially if
you have 2GB of RAM installed. Easy to set up a RAMdisk, which is
essentially a virtual hard drive using your free RAM. I use a 512MB RAMdisk
to store my Windows Temp Files and internet browser cache files. Keep in
mind that once you restart your PC, however, anything stored in the RAMdisk
is purged (lost). For some reason cookie files remain intact after I reboot.
This is a good thing IMHO, but haven't figured out why or how to NOT have it
do this. |
| MoveMe Download |
42 KB | Freeware System Utility | Awesome freeware utility. It allows for
adjustment of Windows screens with using the windows (or 'home') key + arrow
keys and other to move, resize, center, or scroll a window, or even hide the
taskbar. This is an essential utility for the Eee with smaller screen real
estate than what Windows XP was really design for (1024x768). Small app that
I can't live without any more. It even moves windows that normally wouldn't
be moveable. |
| 7-Zip Portable Download |
2.1 MB | Freeware Portable Windows App |
This portable app is free, simple to use, and handles your most common compression schemes including zip, rar, 7z, cab, iso, among others. It has its caveats but can't be beat for the cost and flexibility it offers. |
